An 8-step protocol that works on cooking oil, motor oil, salad dressing, and grease. Using stuff already in your kitchen. No bleach. No rubbing. No halos.
Two reasons. Oil is hydrophobic, meaning water rejects it. Worse, oil molecules wedge into the fiber matrix and bond at multiple sites at once. The longer it sits, the more it polymerizes, especially when heat gets involved. That is reason one.
Reason two: the dryer's heat fuses oil to the fabric in a way no after-the-fact wash can undo. Once an oil stain has been through a hot dryer, it is set for life. The fix is degreasing, not detergent-cleaning. Dish soap (grease-cutting) is engineered specifically to break the oil-water emulsion, which is why it works on grease where laundry detergent fails. Below is the order of operations that makes it work.
How fresh is the stain? Wet and shiny means you have the easy path. Already dried into the fabric means you need step 2 (the powder pull) before any liquid touches it. Has it been through a dryer? If yes, the protocol still works on most fabrics, but expect 2 passes and possibly the Miracle Stain Remover Spray as a finisher.
Anything visibly hardened (wax, chocolate, candle drip)? Scrape with a spoon edge first. Triage in 60 seconds, then commit to the protocol.
Press, do not rub. Soak the surface oil first.
Press a clean dry cloth flat against the stain. Do not rub. Lift, fold to a clean side, press again. Continue until no more oil transfers to the cloth. The goal is to remove every drop of free liquid before applying powder.
Powder. Generous coverage. Let it sit.
Sprinkle baby powder, cornstarch, or baking soda over the entire stain. Use enough to bury it visibly. Let it sit for at least 15 minutes, longer for set-in stains. The powder pulls oil out of the fiber matrix by capillary action. You will see it darken as it absorbs.
Into the trash. Not the sink.
Tilt the garment over a trash can and flick the powder off with a soft brush or your fingernail. Do not dump in the sink; oil-saturated powder clogs drains and coats pipe walls.
Dish soap. Small dab. Direct on stain.
Apply a small dab of dish soap directly to the stain. About a dime-sized amount for most fabrics. Do not use laundry detergent here. Dish soap is engineered to emulsify grease, which is exactly the reaction you need.
Fingertips. Outside in. Gentle.
Work the dish soap into the stain with your fingertips, not a brush. Move from the outside edge inward. This containment direction prevents the stain from spreading into a halo as the dish soap mobilizes the remaining oil.
Walk away. The chemistry needs time.
Lay the garment flat. Leave the dish soap on the stain for 10 to 15 minutes. Set-in stains may need 30. The longer the dwell, the more emulsified oil the rinse can remove.
Warm water. From the back. Until it runs clear.
Run warm water through the back of the stain, not cold. Heat helps dish soap mobilize the oil-soap emulsion (the opposite of ink, where heat sets the stain). Continue until water runs clear. If a faint shadow remains, repeat steps 4 through 7 once more.
Warm cycle. One sheet. Air-dry. Inspect.

Oil congeals at low temperatures. Cold water makes the stain harder to release, not easier. Warm rinse is the rule for grease.

Rubbing spreads oil into a halo around the original stain. Press, lift, refold, press again. Patience is the technique.
