A lot of laundry detergents print "Free & Clear" on the label. The phrase tends to mean the same one thing across the category: no added fragrance. What it does not always tell you is what else is in the rest of the formula.

Earth Breeze Fragrance Free Laundry Detergent Sheets are formulated without four categories of additives we wanted to verify before switching:

• No added fragrance. Nothing from the synthetic-fragrance category and nothing from the essential-oil category. The product is fragrance free at the formulation step, not by removing scent after the fact.
• No optical brighteners. Optical brighteners are UV-reflecting compounds added to many detergents to make whites look brighter under daylight. They don't always wash out fully and can cling to cotton fibers. A formula without them won't add UV-reactivity to your clothes.
• No parabens. Parabens are included in some laundry formulas. Earth Breeze Fragrance Free is formulated without them.
• No synthetic dyes. The sheets are off-white and unpigmented. There is nothing in the formula to tint the wash water or the clothes.

We have a toddler, two adults, and a household preference for minimal-additive cleaning products. We are not making medical claims about any product, and we are not a substitute for any medical resource. What we can describe is the household decision we made and the reasons behind it.

When we read the ingredient list on the conventional fragrance-free detergent we were using, we found the additive list was longer than the front of the label suggested.
